My Story of Non-toxic Cleaning

My cleaning experience ranges from hotel housekeeping at small inns to apartment turnovers to private housecleaning services to cafes’ kitchens, floors, bathrooms and espresso machines .  Bit of a neat freak, and that’s a plus for you.  (Randomly, I also apprenticed with a carpet installer).

Several years ago, I began researching and experimenting with alternatives to bleach, scrubbing bubbles, etc.  I noticed how my head and sinuses ached when I used bleach and how tired and dehydrated I felt at the end of a day using powerful conventional cleaning chemicals and laundry detergents.  My skin burned; my throat burned; and I had no idea what to do about it.  So I looked for solutions.

Around the same time, I discovered the Health and Beauty sections at natural foods stores.  I studied ingredients.  I tried different things.  I mixed my own cleansers and lotions.  And I began to work with essential oils to make my own fragrances.

I started using vinegar and baking soda and hydrogen peroxide to do my cleaning at home.  I discovered that certain citrus essential oils lift the mood and remove grease.  I learned that lavender has naturally occurring anti-microbial properties.  Did you know that?  Neat, huh?  Tea tree oil is a natural anti-fungal – perfect for adding to a shower-cleaning solution.

I’m not gonna lie:  it takes a lot of elbow grease.  It takes extra time and effort.  But I can promise you that your home will:

  1.   Smell fantastic or be fragrance free,
  2.   Shine from top to bottom,
  3.   Be treated like my own,
  4.   Be detailed oh-so-thoroughly, cuz that’s how I do.

’til next time, readers!  Stay cool!
